Fujitsu Scansnap S1300 Review for a Paperless Office

ScanSnap S1300 Document ScannerIt’s hard to believe a piece of office equipment can create such raving fans, but it’s true. The Scansnap document scanners will do that to you.

It’s that paperless freedom that people love. To be able to travel anywhere and still have everything you could potentially need at your finger tips.

With this, I’ve finally been able to set up a paperless office by scanning and shredding three filing cabinets worth of paper. My records are so easy to find that my accountant is going to think I’m some kind of of organizational savant with my sh*t together better than MacGyver with a roll of duct tape and jar full of peanut butter.

It’s been a huge timesaver. I breathe easier being organized and efficient. But best of all, I can now store tax returns that have my social security number fully encrypted using Truecrypt. And not keep those documents around the house vulnerable to potential thieves that could break in.

The two most unbelievable features in my mind are Scan-to-Word and Scan-to-Excel. It does what it says. You can literally take a printed piece of paper and scan it into a fully-editable Microsoft Word or Excel document. It even recognizes bold, underlining, and italics and auto styles the document properly. In my tests only, only two words that should have been bold were not, which is pretty amazing. So you’ll never be stuck with just PDF images of your documents that you can’t edit (like with other scanners in the past). You can actually edit them like the originals. So cool.

So…an auto-document feeder (ADF), duplex scanning (front & back simultaneously) PC & MAC compatible, ABBYY FineReader OCR software, Card Iris (auto import business cards to your contacts. Amazing!), Scan-to-Word, and Scan-to-Excel, auto blank page deletion, and auto-page rotation.

It doesn’t get any better than this for a paperless office. Highly recommended.
