Review: E-Myth Revisited
“The difference between a warrior and an ordinary man is that a warrior sees everything as a challenge, while an ordinary man sees everything as either a blessing or a curse.”
-Carlos Castaneda, A Separate Peace, quoted in E-Myth
In the E-Myth Revisited, Michael Gerber explains what it means to be an entrepreneur and who you have to become to succeed as an entrepreneur.
For instance, Gerber says every entrepreneur wears three hats:
1.) Entrepreneur, 2.) Manager, and 3.) Technician. The entrepreneur looks to the future, making his vision into a reality. The manager lives in the past, running systems that the entrepreneur created and generally keeping order. And the technician lives in the present, caught up in the flow of producing and refining products to the best of his ability.
If an entrepreneur has a business that cannot run without their presence, they’re likely living only as technician, Gerber says. He explains how people fall into this trap and ways they can progress beyond it.
For entrepreneurs who do not feel stuck in their development, Gerber explains an approach to systemizing your business so that it runs smoothly without your daily presence. This is the real value of The E-Myth if you are already an experienced entrepreneur. I’ve never found a better method to systemization than Gerber’s. And I read WAY too many business books.
Gerber’s genius isn’t necessarily the originality of all his ideas—you’ll see his themes in other books and here at LOD as well. But it is his ability to illustrate his ideas so incredibly clearly and effectively. It’s easy to see why so many people claim the E-Myth Revisited to be an eye opener.
Enjoyable and highly recommended for entrepreneurs!
